Liver Transplant is often recommended as an option when other modes of treatment are not successful. The purpose is to replace your diseased liver with a healthy liver. Ideally, after a transplant you will be free from disease, and lead a fairly normal life as long as the transplant functions.

What are the Types of Liver transplants ?
There are three options for liver transplantation: cadaver donor transplantation, living donor transplantation, and auxiliary transplantation.

Cadaver donor: The donor liver is obtained from a person who is diagnosed as brain dead, whose family volunteers to donate the organ for transplantation. People who receive cadaver donors wait on the institutional / regional list until a suitable donor becomes available. The waiting times vary. |

Living donor:
A healthy family member, usually a parent, sibling, or child, or someone emotionally close to you, such as a spouse, volunteers to donate part of their liver for transplantation. The donor is carefully evaluated by the team to make sure no harm will come to the donor or recipient.

Auxiliary transplantation: Part of the liver of a healthy adult donor (living or cadaver) is transplanted into the recipient. The patient’s diseased liver remains intact until the auxiliary piece regenerates and assumes function. The diseased liver may then be removed. This technique is rarely used now. |

The Center of Nephrology and Neurology have a sizeable and comprehensive renal transplant program, having performed both autologous and cadaveric transplants. It has the first organ transplant registry in India. The Centres also perform minimally invasive surgery for renal donors thereby minimising post-operative recovery time and hospitalisation.

Dr. Ravi Shankar Bhat has an interesting career spanning 20 yrs of a passionate practice of medicine to the service of mankind. He has graduated from Bangalore medical college & went on to pursue his masters degree in general surgery from the T. N Medical College, Mumbai. His zeal to learn newer invention of surgery earned him an M.Ch in Surgical gastroenterology from India’s premier institute the, All India institute of medical sciences, New Delhi. He has to his credit an FRCS from Edinburg, an International tag. His steep focus to embark on advanced skills in surgery fetched him a fellow ship in liver transplantation. Dr. Bhat has to his credit around 700 noticeable number of surgeries, which demands a high proficiency level to perform the surgery. They include Liver resections, Bariatric surgery, Porto systemic shunts, Whipple’s pancreatico duodenectomy, Lateral pancreaticojejunostomy, Treatment of pseudocyst of pancreas, Colonic transposition for corrosive stricture oesophagus, Oesophagectomy for cancer, Gastrectomy, Lap rectopexy, Lap fundoplication. Dr. Bobby Chacko is senior nephrology consultant & transplant physician at Apollo hospital, Bangalore with over ten years experience in the field of nephrology. He completed his MBBS from St. Johns, Bangalore where he was recognized as the best out going student having secured the highest marks. He achieved his specialist degree (DM Nephrology) from Christian Medical College, Vellore and was awarded gold medal for DNB Nephrology. A recipient of the Rekha memorial Tanker young investigator award for his exemplary work on IgA nephropathy in India, he is a co-investigator in many multinational clinical trials. He has numerous international publications to his credit besides being reviewer for reputed journals like Kidney International and NDT. Dr. Chacko served as renal consultant at the prestigious Nephrology and Transplantation services (The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Adelaide) for three years during which period he obtained the FRACP degree. As a transplant consultant he has gained expertise in dealing with ABO incompatible and highly sensitized renal transplants.
