Embolisation of Spinal Dural AV Fistula

Team of Neurosurgeons (Dr K N Krishna and team) and neurologists (Dr Sreekanta Swamy) evaluated the case of progressive weakness of lower limbs for which MRI spine showed swelling of the spinal cord due to abnormal cross connection of spinal blood vessels which is known as dural arteriovenous malformation. This is a surgical condition which needs spinal surgery to disconnect the abnormal connection between the vessels sitting on the spinal cord.

After the Spinal Angiogram by Dr Sharath Kumar G G, Consultant Neurointerventionist the exact site of the pathology was identified and treated simultaneously in the same sitting using endovascular glue injection (procedure in which abnormal blood vessel was blocked with a glue like medication using small catheters in the blood vessel there by disconnecting the abnormal connection). This avoided the surgery and patient improved significantly on the next day. Patient was discharged after two days. This minimally invasive procedure was done under local anesthesia with 3 ml of glue like material, thereby avoiding a surgery and early discharge of the patient. This procedure is as good as open surgery in long run.View More
